What Is a Queen Cell?

A queen cell is a specially constructed, peanut-shaped wax cell in which a developing queen bee is raised. Unlike worker bees, the larva inside a queen cell is fed an exclusive diet of royal jelly from the moment she is placed — triggering the development of a fully reproductive queen rather than a sterile worker. When you receive a ripe queen cell from Heritage Bee Farm, she is within days of emerging and ready to take over a queenless colony or a prepared split.

How Heritage Bee Farm Raises Queen Cells

We have been raising queens in Florida for over 20 years, with experience managing beekeeping operations of up to 15,000 colonies. At Heritage Bee Farm, queen cells are produced using the cell builder method — each cell is started and finished in a single strong colony specifically maintained for that purpose.

Our cell builder colonies are generously fed with sugar syrup and pollen patties throughout the production cycle. This keeps the nurse bee population in peak nutritional condition so that the royal jelly they produce for developing queens is rich and abundant. A well-fed cell builder raises better queens — the nutrition queens receive during development shapes their quality for their entire laying life.

Because our cell builder method requires a strong, healthy nurse bee population at all times, we replenish brood frames into each cell builder colony on a weekly basis to maintain the nurse bee numbers needed for consistent, high-quality cell production. This is not a shortcut operation — it is a deliberate, managed process built around getting the nutrition and colony conditions right.

Our breeder queens include Italian, Carniolan, Caucasian, and Buckfast lines, giving our open-mated queen cells access to a genetically diverse drone pool across our apiary locations in four Florida counties. We maintain 150 to 200 deep three-way mating nucs at each location to support strong local drone populations.

What Makes Our Queen Cells Stand Out

  • Cell builder method — every cell started and finished in one dedicated, well-maintained colony
  • Heavy syrup and pollen feeding throughout production — superior royal jelly nutrition for developing queens
  • Weekly brood replenishment — ensures cell builder colonies always have peak nurse bee populations
  • Diverse breeder stock — Italian, Carniolan, Caucasian, and Buckfast lines in our genetic pool
  • Open-mated with local Florida drones across four-county apiary network — strong, genetically diverse colonies
  • Central Florida location allows earlier-season grafting than most producers — giving customers access to quality cells sooner

Shipping and Pickup Information

Queen cells are time-critical. Cells emerge on a fixed schedule and must be in your hive or mating nuc before emergence — not after. Here is exactly how our shipping and pickup process works.

  • Cells ship via UPS Next Day Air the day before emergence — you must be ready to install them the morning they arrive
  • Minimum order of 50 cells for shipped orders — this ensures enough cells to justify the overnight shipping cost and logistics
  • Farm pickup is available in smaller quantities at our Myakka City, Florida location — contact us to arrange a pickup appointment that works with our production schedule
  • Select your ship or pickup date from the variant selector above — each date reflects our actual grafting and emergence calendar
  • We will contact you if any adjustments to your date are needed due to weather or colony conditions

How to Receive and Install Queen Cells

Receiving ripe queen cells requires preparation and speed. Here is the process that gives you the best results.

  • Have your queenless splits or mating nucs fully prepared and in position before your cells arrive — do not improvise on arrival day
  • Keep cells warm during transport — 92 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. A small styrofoam cooler with a heat pack works well for short distances
  • Install immediately on arrival — do not refrigerate cells or leave them sitting in a vehicle
  • Place each cell veil-end down between two frames in the upper brood area, secured in a cell protector or push-in cage
  • Expect emergence within 24 to 48 hours of receiving ripe cells from Heritage Bee Farm
  • Allow 3 to 4 weeks after emergence for the new queen to complete mating flights and begin laying

Who Buys Queen Cells from Heritage Bee Farm?

  • Commercial beekeepers making large numbers of splits who need reliable cells at scale
  • Queen rearers who want quality Florida-raised cells as a foundation for their own mating program
  • Experienced hobbyists expanding their apiary through splits rather than purchasing full nucs or mated queens
  • Beekeepers who have lost queens unexpectedly and need a fast solution for multiple colonies
  • Local beekeepers near Myakka City who can pick up smaller quantities directly from the farm

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I order fewer than 50 cells?

Yes — for farm pickup only. The 50-cell minimum applies to shipped orders to cover the overnight logistics. Local beekeepers can contact us to arrange a pickup appointment for smaller quantities.

What breed are the cells?

Our queen cells are grafted from our Italian and Carniolan breeder queens primarily, with Caucasian and Buckfast breeders also contributing to our genetic pool. If you have a specific breed preference for a large order, contact us to discuss availability.

What if a cell doesn't emerge or the queen fails to mate?

Cell viability is very high when cells are handled correctly, kept warm during transport, and installed promptly.

Should I choose queen cells or a mated queen?

Mated queens are ready to lay immediately upon introduction — lower risk, faster results, better for single-hive beekeepers or emergency requeening. Queen cells are the choice for beekeepers making multiple splits at once, running a queen rearing program, or wanting to scale at lower cost per unit. Both options are available from Heritage Bee Farm.
