A Real Bee Farm Adventure — Built for Kids

Most kids learn about honeybees from a book or a classroom video. At Heritage Bee Farm, they get to live it. Our 1.5-hour guided bee farm experience puts children in real beekeeper gear, at real working hives, with a real beekeeper walking them through every step. It is exciting, educational, completely safe — and genuinely unlike anything most kids have ever done.

Heritage Bee Farm is a working commercial beekeeping operation on 25 acres of Florida countryside near Myakka River State Park. Children are not visiting a curated exhibit — they are stepping into a real, active farm where the bees, the honey, and the beekeeping are completely authentic. That is exactly what makes this experience something kids talk about long after they go home.

What Kids Do During the Experience

  • Learn the basics of honeybee life — the waggle dance, why bees make honey, the difference between a queen, worker, and drone, and why bees matter to our food supply. Our beekeeper delivers this in a way that is engaging, age-appropriate, and genuinely interesting for kids.
  • Suit up in real beekeeper gear — every child gets a full protective suit or jacket and veil, just like the professionals wear. Suiting up is a highlight in itself — kids love it and the photos are priceless.
  • Light a bee smoker — learn what a smoker is, why beekeepers use it, and help get it going before heading to the hives.
  • Walk into the bee yard — step into a real working apiary and see thousands of bees at work up close. Children observe foragers returning with pollen loads, watch bees fanning the entrance, and get a firsthand look at the organized world inside a living colony.
  • Hold a live frame of bees — with guidance from the beekeeper, children hold a frame covered in live bees. This is the moment that surprises kids the most — and the photo their parents will save forever.
  • Taste fresh honey from the farm — raw wildflower honey straight from Heritage Bee Farm hives. For many kids this is their first experience with real, unprocessed honey — and the reaction is always the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe for kids?

Yes. Every child is in protective gear before approaching the hives, and our beekeeper manages the colony carefully throughout the experience. We have welcomed hundreds of children through this experience — it is designed to be exciting and safe at the same time. Children over age 5 are fully engaged and comfortable. Younger children are welcome with a parent but may have a shorter attention span for the instructional portion. **Safety is our number one concern and since we are dealing with nature and bees CAN sting we request that If anyone attending is allergic to bees they should consider if this is the best field trip for them.

What if my child is afraid of bees?

Many children arrive nervous and leave as bee enthusiasts. The protective gear makes a big difference — once kids are suited up and realize the bees cannot reach them, confidence builds quickly. Our beekeeper is experienced at introducing nervous children to the hive environment gradually and patiently. We find that going slowly and explaining everything along the way turns hesitation into genuine excitement.

What age is best?

Children ages 5 and up get the most from the experience. They are old enough to follow the instructional lesson, engaged enough to enjoy the hive inspection, and at exactly the right age for the wonder of seeing and holding real bees up close. Older children and teenagers are equally welcome — the experience is genuinely fascinating at any age.

Do you accommodate school groups and Scout troops?

Yes — we welcome school field trips, homeschool co-ops, Scout troops, and youth organization groups. Group bookings of 20 or more children should contact us directly to arrange scheduling, discuss chaperone ratios, and confirm date availability. We can tailor the educational portion of the experience to specific curriculum goals or badge requirements.

What should kids wear?

Closed-toe shoes are required — no sandals or open-toed footwear. Comfortable, light-colored clothing is preferred. Avoid strong perfumes or scented products on the day of the visit. We provide all protective gear over whatever your child is wearing.
