A queen's reproductive capacity is established during her larval development and cannot be improved after the fact. How to Receive and Transport Queen Cells
Queen cells are among the most time-sensitive products in beekeeping. A cell that is handled incorrectly between shipment and installation can be lost — and with it, the two-week wait for a laying queen. Here is how to handle them properly.
Timing Your Order
Heritage Bee Farm ships queen cells on a seasonal schedule aligned with our rearing calendar. Cells are shipped at the appropriate stage of development to arrive ready for installation. When you place your order, you will receive your scheduled ship date — plan your splits or nuc builds around that date, not before.
Have your receiving colonies or nucs prepared and queenless before your cells arrive. Do not remove the existing queen from a colony until you are confident your cells are en route and on schedule.
Temperature Is Everything
Queen cells must be kept warm — between 93°F and 95°F — from the moment they leave our farm to the moment they are installed. A cell that drops below 80°F for even a short period risks chilling, which can kill the developing queen or cause deformities that are not visible until she fails to perform.
If you are picking up locally, bring a small cooler with a warm water bottle or a battery-operated heat source. If cells are being shipped, open the package immediately on arrival and install as quickly as possible. Do not refrigerate. Do not leave cells in a vehicle in direct sunlight.
Inspect Before Installing
Before installation, inspect each cell carefully. A healthy, viable cell is firm, fully capped, and shows no signs of discoloration or damage. A cell that feels hollow, looks sunken, or rattles when gently shaken should not be installed — contact us immediately if you believe a cell arrived compromised.
How to Install Queen Cells: Step-by-Step
Proper installation is the final variable in queen cell success. Even the highest-quality cell can be rejected if it is installed incorrectly or into an unprepared colony.
Prepare a Queenless Environment
Cells must be installed into colonies or nucs that have been queenless for at least four to six hours. A colony with a laying queen present will almost always reject or destroy an introduced cell. Confirm queenlessness before installation and remove any emergency queen cells the colony may have started building on its own.
Choose Your Installation Method
There are several accepted methods for installing a queen cell. The most reliable approach for grafted cells is direct installation: gently press the base of the cell into the comb between two frames, positioning it vertically with the tip pointed downward as it would hang naturally. Do not crush or compress the cell during this process.
Alternatively, cells can be placed in a push-in cage or cell protector to give the developing queen additional protection until she emerges and the colony accepts her. This is particularly useful in small nucs where a young, emerging queen may be at risk from worker bees before pheromone acceptance is established.
Do Not Disturb for 10–14 Days
After installation, leave the colony alone. Opening the hive to check on the cell is one of the most common causes of queen loss — bees are sensitive to disruption during the acceptance window, and an inspection at the wrong moment can trigger rejection. Mark your calendar for 10 to 14 days after installation to check for eggs and young brood, which confirm a successfully mated, laying queen.
