What Is Beeswax and How Do Bees Produce It?

Beeswax is a natural wax secreted by worker honey bees from four pairs of wax glands located on the underside of their abdomens. Bees must consume approximately six to eight pounds of honey to produce one pound of wax — which is part of why pure beeswax commands a significant price premium over paraffin and synthetic alternatives. The metabolic cost to the colony is substantial.
Young worker bees — typically between 12 and 18 days old — are responsible for wax production. They consume honey, and as their wax glands mature, small wax flakes form on their abdomens. Other bees chew and manipulate these flakes, mixing them with saliva and other secretions, until they become workable. Bees use this wax to build comb — the hexagonal cells that serve as the structural foundation of the hive, housing brood, honey, and pollen.
The color of beeswax varies considerably. Newly produced wax is nearly white. Over time, as bees move pollen through the comb and brood develops within it, the wax absorbs pigments and compounds from propolis, pollen, and honey, darkening to yellow, amber, or brown. Beeswax vs. Paraffin: Why the Difference Matters

Most candles, lip balms, and wax-based products on the market are made with paraffin — a petroleum-derived wax that is inexpensive, widely available, and easy to work with. Paraffin has its uses, but it is not the same material as beeswax, and the differences are worth understanding before you decide what to buy or work with.
Burn Quality
Beeswax candles burn significantly longer than paraffin candles of the same size — typically two to five times longer, depending on wick size and diameter. Beeswax has a higher melting point than paraffin (around 145°F versus 99°–145°F for various paraffin grades), which means it burns more slowly and steadily. It also drips less, producing a cleaner burn with less wasted wax pooling around the wick.
Beeswax candles produce a warm, natural light with a color temperature close to sunlight — around 5,500 Kelvin — which many people find more pleasant and less harsh than the light produced by paraffin or soy wax candles. This is a result of the natural compounds in the wax, not any additive.
Scent

What You Can Make With Beeswax: A Practical Guide

Craft and candle grade beeswax is the most versatile form for most makers. It is suitable for the full range of applications below without requiring pharmaceutical or cosmetic certification, while still being pure, natural, and free of additives.
Candles
Candle making is the most popular application for beeswax and the one most people associate with it. Beeswax candles can be made in several styles — poured container candles, rolled sheet candles, dipped tapers, and molded pillars — each with its own technique and wick requirements.
A few things to know before you start: beeswax requires a larger wick than paraffin or soy wax of the same diameter, because its higher melting point demands more heat to maintain a full melt pool. Wick sizing is one of the most common points of failure for first-time beeswax candle makers. Starting with square braid cotton wicks and testing in your specific mold or container before committing to a large batch is always the right approach.
Beeswax also adheres strongly to molds — releasing a finished candle from a silicone or metal mold requires either a mold release agent or a brief period in the freezer to contract the wax. This is normal and expected; it is not a sign of a problem with the wax.
Lip Balm and Skin Care
Beeswax is a foundational ingredient in lip balm, lotion bars, salves, and a range of skin care formulations. Thread Waxing and Sewing
Dragging thread across a block of beeswax before hand sewing reduces tangling, strengthens the thread, and makes it easier to pull through fabric. This is a traditional technique in leatherworking, bookbinding, and hand tailoring that remains as practical today as it was before synthetic thread conditioners existed. A small block of beeswax used for this purpose lasts for years.
Waterproofing
Beeswax applied to fabric creates a natural water-resistant finish. It is the traditional treatment for waxed canvas — the material used in classic outdoor bags, hats, and jackets. Applied to shoes and boots, it restores water resistance and conditions the leather simultaneously. Applied to zippers, it reduces friction and prevents sticking. The applications are broad and the technique straightforward: apply wax to the material and work it in with friction or gentle heat from a hair dryer.
Furniture Polish and Surface Care
Beeswax furniture polish is a natural alternative to silicone-based commercial polishes that can build up on surfaces over time. Combined with turpentine or a citrus solvent, beeswax produces a paste wax that protects and enhances wood surfaces, fills minor scratches, and produces a warm, hand-rubbed finish that most woodworkers and furniture restorers prefer over spray-on alternatives.

How to Work With Beeswax: Tips for Beginners
Melting Safely
Beeswax should always be melted using a double boiler — never directly over an open flame or on a burner without a water bath. Beeswax has a flash point of around 400°F, and while it is difficult to reach that temperature accidentally, overheating beeswax produces acrolein fumes and degrades the wax. A double boiler keeps the temperature controlled and the wax well below any danger threshold.
Use a dedicated pot or container for melting beeswax — it is extremely difficult to fully remove from cookware once used. Stainless steel or aluminum pots designated for wax work are the most practical approach for anyone who plans to work with beeswax regularly.
Measuring
Beeswax is most accurately measured by weight, not volume. The density of wax varies slightly with temperature, and volume measurements are unreliable for formulation work. A basic kitchen scale makes beeswax projects significantly more repeatable and consistent.
Cleaning Up
Beeswax is much easier to clean up when it is still warm and liquid. Wipe surfaces and tools with paper towels while the wax is still molten. For hardened wax on tools, gentle reheating loosens the wax enough to wipe clean. Soap and water alone will not remove solidified beeswax — heat is the only reliable solution.

- Color: pure, unbleached beeswax ranges from pale yellow to deep amber depending on how much brood cycling the comb has seen. Bright white wax has been bleached; this is not inherently a problem, but bleached wax has had some natural compounds removed
- Scent: genuine beeswax has a natural, faintly sweet honey-and-propolis scent. Wax with no scent at all, or with an unusual chemical smell, has likely been heavily processed or adulterated
- Source transparency: a supplier who can tell you where their wax comes from — which operation or region — is a supplier with something honest to say. Generic bulk wax with no origin information warrants more scrutiny
- Purity: pure beeswax should not contain paraffin, synthetic waxes, or adulterants. The simplest field test is the fingernail test — genuine beeswax leaves a smooth mark when you drag your fingernail across it; paraffin-adulterated wax tends to flake or crumble
