Our NUC’s consist of a total of 5 frames with 2 frames of brood capped and eggs 1 frame of food stores (honey and pollen) and 2 drawn frames with some food stores. A "NUC" is a common name in beekeeping which is short for the word NUCLEUS. The NUC is an established honeybee colony which has taken it about 6 weeks of work and is now ready for growth during a strong spring nectar flow. Most of the frames are new however are becoming established and It will be necessary to transfer the Nuc hive into into a larger 8 or 10 frame hive in the coming days so please plan your equipment needs accordingly. Each NUC will come in a long lasting corrugated box (that can be used for years) your nuc will have a new laying Queen and the majority of the bees will be from her offspring.

Our bees are primarily a cross of Italian, Carniolan or Buckfast. Our Queens are open mated so we ensure that our stock has the best mix of traits for Honey production, Pollination, Hygenic and Varroa Resistance and Gentleness. A NUC is 5 frame standard 9 5/8” hive with bees a new queen bee and brood of all ages. We use Jester’s durable reusable boxes and additional ones may be purchased separately. The frames for the NUC are standard for deep hive body frame of 9 1/8”.
Although we attempt to follow a schedule in our Nuc delivery, we all need to remember that Beekeeping is a form of agriculture and relies heavily on season and weather changes, please plan accordinglyNUCs are ready to be moved/picked-up in the early am. We make your Nucs ready the evening before by closing their entrances after dark. This is done to ensure that all of the much needed field bees have retuned before closing up the hive. Depending upon the season, the time can vary from sunrise to about 10:00am. Please take Bees straight to the area will you will install them. They cannot be left in the sun and you will need to have prepared their new location so that when you arrive you can open the Nuc colony and they can begin getting familiar with their new surroundings. Evening Pick-ups can also be arranged.
Heritage Bee Farm will make a 6 5/8 medium size NUC for you on a special order basis. Please let us know your needs and we can determine if we are able to accommodate them.
When you see the nuc hive about 80% filled with bees it about time to plan on moving to a standard 8 or 10 frame box. This is also especially important if there is a lot of brood and its in the middle of a spring flow. Once your standard equipment is in place and ready, you can take your nuc frames and transfer them into their new box with either drawn comb of empty frame ready to be drawn out.
If you would like your NUC installed in your equipment, or a new wooden NUC box we would be happy to do this for a $5 charge for each NUC installation requested, and you will need to deliver your equipment to us. For your convenience please drop your equipment off a few weeks or at least a couple of days in advance of your nuc pickup date. Please bring a ratchet strap to hold the hive together when it is being moved.
Unfortunately, we cannot ship Nuc hives so we try to make it the very best pickup process.
